Next Steps for Serious Writers

Staying the Course

Encouragement for the Long Haul

Writing a book is not a sprint.
It’s a slow, steady journey filled with excitement, doubt, discovery, and often… delays.

Maybe you started strong, but life got busy.
Maybe you’ve hit a wall in chapter six.
Maybe you’re wondering if this calling was really meant for someone else.

If you’re feeling discouraged, stuck, or just tired, this one’s for you.

The Slow Middle Is Normal

Every writer hits the point where momentum fades. The beginning was exciting. The end feels too far off. And now? You’re somewhere in the middle, wondering if it’s worth it.

Here’s the truth: it is.

This “messy middle” is where depth is forged – where the message settles deeper into you as you wrestle with it on the page.

Progress Doesn’t Always Look Like Pages

Sometimes writing looks like praying.
Sometimes it’s staring out the window.
Sometimes it’s deleting what no longer fits.

That’s still progress.

Measuring your journey only by word count can rob you of the transformation happening in the process.

Your Calling Didn’t Expire

When God places a message on your heart, He doesn’t forget about it when you get tired, distracted, or discouraged. Your calling is not fragile and your words are not wasted.

If the pace has slowed, don’t assume it’s over. Sometimes God builds depth before He releases direction.

Reconnect with Your “Why”

When the path gets long, return to your original reason for writing:

  • Who did you hope to serve or encourage?
  • What burden or testimony stirred this message in you?
  • What would it mean for just one person to read it?

Write down your “why” and put it where you can see it. Let it anchor you when motivation feels low.

Practical Ways to Stay Grounded

  • Set micro-goals (finish a paragraph, not a chapter)
  • Revisit what you’ve already written – you may surprise yourself
  • Take a short break, but put a date on your calendar to return
  • Find accountability – a friend, group, or coach to check in
  • Celebrate small wins (they matter more than you think)
