Preparing for Launch

What to Do Before You Publish

You’ve written the words. You’ve revised, refined, and maybe even had a few late-night editing sessions.

Now it’s almost time to publish your book.

But before you launch it into the world, let’s hit pause and make sure you’re truly ready for the next step.

Because publishing isn’t just about hitting “print.” It’s about making sure your message, materials, and mindset are all aligned for the impact you hope to make.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare well – so your launch is purposeful, not panicked.

Step 1: Finalize the Manuscript

Before you do anything else, double-check that your manuscript is truly ready:

  • It’s been professionally edited (developmental + copyediting + proofreading)
  • Formatting is complete and fits the final layout (print and/or digital)
  • You’ve reviewed and approved all design elements (cover, interior, etc.)

Don’t rush this stage. A great book deserves great attention to detail.

Step 2: Prepare Your Marketing Materials

Yes, even if you’re not a “marketing person.”

Think of marketing as ministry with strategy. It’s how your message reaches the people who need it.

Start with:

  • A compelling book description (back cover & online)
  • Author bio + high-resolution photo
  • A few social media graphics or teaser quotes
  • A launch announcement email or social post

Step 3: Rally Your People

You don’t need a massive audience. You just need a faithful few who believe in your message.

Reach out to:

  • Friends, family, and followers who can help share the news
  • Beta readers or early supporters who can leave reviews
  • Local communities (church, small groups, colleagues) who may want to celebrate or host a gathering

Step 4: Set a Thoughtful Timeline

A great launch isn’t rushed. Give yourself time to:

  • Build anticipation
  • Prepare content and graphics
  • Schedule interviews, events, or email series
  • Rest before the big day (yes, really)

Planning ahead protects your energy and your message.

Step 5: Define What Success Means to You

Your book doesn’t have to hit a bestseller list to be successful.
Ask yourself:

  • What impact do I hope this book makes?
  • How will I celebrate obedience, not just outcomes?
  • What feedback or fruit would make this worth it?

When you define success in alignment with your values, you free yourself from unnecessary pressure.
