Writing on Empty?
How to Build a Routine That Actually Works
You’re passionate about writing, but let’s be honest: passion alone doesn’t get words on the page.
Life is full. You’re balancing family, work, ministry, and responsibilities that don’t pause just because you have a book on your heart. So what happens? You sit down to write, but you’re exhausted, scattered, or frozen. Weeks pass, and your book idea sits quietly in your notes app, waiting for “the right time.”
Friend, the right time is rarely convenient. But it can be intentional.
Here’s how to build a writing routine that actually works – one that honors your capacity, helping you move your book forward even when life is busy.
1. Embrace Small Starts
You don’t need to write for two hours every morning at 5 a.m. to be a “real writer.” Consistency beats intensity when building a writing habit.
Start with 15-30 minutes, 2-3 times a week. Guard these small pockets of time like appointments with your future self and let them add up.
2. Know Your Energy Patterns
When are you most alert? For some, it’s early morning before the house wakes up. For others, it’s during lunch breaks or late evenings.
Your writing rhythm should match your natural energy, not fight against it.
3. Make It Sustainable
Your writing plan should fit you, not the other way around. If you’re in a busy season, it’s okay for your plan to reflect that. Progress is still progress, even if it’s one page at a time.
Give yourself permission to pivot as needed. This is why we created our Weekly Writing Rhythm Planner – so you can map your writing in a way that honors both your goals and your real life.

4. Remove Decision Fatigue
Decision fatigue kills momentum. Decide when you’ll write and what you’ll write ahead of time.
- Set your next writing session on your calendar.
- Note the topic or scene you’ll tackle next.
- Keep your writing materials ready so you can jump in quickly.
5. Let Grace Be Your Guide
Miss a writing day? Don’t quit.
Your book isn’t a test of perfection. Show up again, even if imperfectly.
