Blog Series: Answers Every New Writer Needs

Overwhelmed?
Here’s Exactly Where to Start with Your Book
You’ve got the spark – that nudge that says, “There’s a book in me.” You’ve maybe even jotted down ideas in a notebook or journaled your story over coffee. But when it comes to actually starting? Cue the overwhelm.
You’re not alone. One of the most common things we hear from aspiring authors is:
“I want to write, but I don’t know where to begin.”
So let’s clear the noise. Here’s exactly where to start when your heart is full of ideas, but your hands don’t know what to type first.
1. Clarify Your Core Message
Before you outline or title chapters, get clear on the heart of your book.
Ask yourself: “What do I really want my reader to walk away with?”
Whether it’s healing, hope, transformation, or practical guidance—your core message will shape everything else.
2. Define Who You’re Writing For
Your book isn’t for everyone and that’s a good thing. Think about your ideal reader:
- What are they struggling with?
- What do they long to hear?
- Where are they in life or faith?
Knowing who you’re writing to helps you write with them in mind – not just about your own experience, but for their benefit.
3. Choose Your Genre (Before You Start Writing)
Is this a memoir? A devotional? A how-to guide? A novel with faith-infused themes?
Understanding your book’s genre early on will save you hours of backtracking. It gives your writing structure, and it helps you focus your storytelling.
4. Create a Simple Roadmap
You don’t need a 30-page outline. But you do need a direction. Sketch out a few key chapters or sections you know you want to include. This becomes your guide – not your prison. It keeps you grounded when ideas start pulling you in 12 directions.
5. Block Time and Start Small
Writing a book sounds big (because it is). But writing a page? That’s doable.
Block time, even if it’s just 30 minutes a few times a week. The consistency is more important than word count.
