Writing Is More Than a Habit
It's a Practice
There’s a lot of conversation around consistency when it comes to writing.
Write every day. Hit your word count. Stick to a schedule. Don’t break the streak.
And while discipline has its place, this way of thinking can quietly turn writing into something rigid, something heavy.
Writing isn’t just a habit. It’s a practice. And there’s a difference.
Habits Are About Repetition. Practices Are About Presence.
A habit focuses on how often you do something. A practice focuses on how you show up when you do.
When writing becomes only about repetition, it’s easy to feel like you’re failing if life interrupts your routine. Miss a few days. Lose momentum. Start questioning whether you’re really a writer at all.
A practice, on the other hand, leaves room for seasons. Some seasons are productive and flowing. Others are slower, reflective, or quiet. And all of them still count.
Why So Many Writers Burn Out on “Consistency”
Many writers don’t stop because they’ve lost their love for writing. They stop because the pressure around it becomes too loud.
Pressure to:
- Finish faster
- Write better
- Be more disciplined
- Keep up with others
Over time, that pressure can disconnect you from the very reason you started writing in the first place.
When writing is treated as a practice, you’re allowed to learn as you go. You’re allowed to write badly. You’re allowed to change your mind. You’re allowed to grow. That’s not failure. That’s development.
A Writing Practice Evolves With You
One of the quiet truths we see again and again at BTMP is this: writers don’t stay the same from chapter one to the final page.
Your voice sharpens.
Your clarity deepens.
Your confidence shifts.
A practice acknowledges that growth. What worked for you last year may not work now. The schedule you once needed may no longer fit your life. That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong; it means you’re paying attention. Writing well requires honesty, not rigidity.
Permission to Write in Seasons
Some seasons are for drafting. Some are for revising. Some are for resting. A healthy writing practice recognizes all three.
If you’ve been feeling disconnected from writing lately, it might not be because you lack discipline.
- It may be because you’re trying to force a version of consistency that no longer fits your life.
- It might be because you need permission to approach it differently. To release the idea that writing must look the same at every stage.
What This Means for Your Book
Books that are written with care – not pressure – tend to hold more depth. They reflect lived experience, not rushed output. When you treat writing as a practice, you allow your story to mature. You give yourself space to think, reflect, and revise thoughtfully. And that intention shows up on the page.

Ask instead:
- What season am I in?
- What does my writing need right now?
- How can I show up with more honesty and less pressure?
Writing doesn’t need to be forced. It needs to be practiced.
